What is the OBISSS?

The Online Brain Injury Screening and Support System (OBISSS) is a secure screening tool that helps identify whether someone may have experienced a brain injury during their life. It also screens for related challenges that might still be affecting them.

OBISSS is a national program provided by the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA).

Who can use the OBISSS?

Anyone can complete the screening on their own, or with the help of a professional.

The OBISSS can be used to screen for brain injuries for anyone 13 years or older. For youth between the ages of 13-17, a parent or guardian needs to give their consent.

How it works

The OBISSS uses two trusted tools:

  1. The Ohio State University Traumatic Brain Injury Identification Method (OSU-BI-ID), which is a standardized tool that screens for a person’s lifetime history of traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuries
  2. The Symptoms Questionnaire for Brain Injury (SQBI)
Created by the University of Denver and the MINDSOURCE Brain Injury Network, the SQBI is series of questions that screens for challenges in nine areas that are common after a brain injury

After completing the OBISSS, the screening results are automatically emailed to the participant and their provider (if applicable). If screened positive for possible brain injury, OBISSS will also email information on any challenges that they may be experiencing and tips for support.

OBISSS collects basic demographic information that is stored by NASHIA in a HIPAA compliant database. MINDSOURCE does not receive any personally identifying data about your results.

NASHIA developed a helpful introductory video on the OBISSS that walks through the steps to completing the OBISSS and provides additional information on how it works.
